    CARE – Student Facilitators

We are looking for two students to co-facilitate a cancer program called CARE (Cancer Awareness, Resources, and Education). CARE provides education and psychosocial support for cancer pts who receive their care and tx at San Francisco General Hospital (SFGH). The program provides pts with a warm and welcoming environment where they can learn self-care and coping skills. CARE is an award-winning program in which guest speakers join us to provide experiential education on topics such as Care and Treatment Options, Nutrition, Symptom Management, Stress Reduction, Complementary/Alternative Medicine, and more.

For more information about CARE, please visit our website at http://www.caresfgh.org. The summer 2008 English CARE group series will take place at the Avon Breast Center on the SFGH campus on Tuesdays from 5:30 – 7:30pm (dinner is provided) beginning June 3rd and will run 10 weeks through August 5th. Duties of the co-facilitator include helping out with logistics (setting up the room, filling out taxi vouchers, etc.), taking qualitative field notes and conducting process evaluations. The CARE co-facilitator position provides a unique opportunity to learn about the intricacies of pt education through working with medically underserved cancer pts in a supportive, non-clinical setting.

If you are interested and available to make a commitment for the entire series, please send your CV or biosketch and we can set up a time to talk.

Anne Fadiman award winning book describes a Hmong family as they attempt to access medical care for their child and the imbedded cultural conflicts between Western medicine and the traditional Hmong culture. The Spirit Catches You and You Fall Down was instrumental in fostering the cultural competence movement in health care practice. Her message will certainly resonate with the San Francisco General Hospital community.

Clínica Martín-Baró provides free, quality health care to the uninsured and low-income residents of the Mission District in San Francisco . The clinic offers comprehensive care through drop-in health exams, free medications, patient education, patient referrals and follow-up evaluations. It also provides an educational environment that facilitates clinical and community outreach experiences to those who seek to provide health care to the underserved, and health maintenance and disease prevention education to its patients and community.
