The answer is b. SMA syndrome is a rare cause of duodenal obstruction. The 3rd portion of the duodenum is compressed by the SMA as it branches from the aorta and passes over the duodenum. The angle normally is 45 degrees, but is less in SMA syndrome. Rapid weight loss in adults can lead to the syndrome from lack of mesenteric or retroperitoneal fat. Other associates are scoliosis, full body casts, and large AAA’s. Symptoms include post prandial epigastric pain, abdominal distension, nausea, and vomiting of partially digested food.
