The Significance of your ABSITE score
The 2013 Absite scores are back. The significance of your Absite score is that programs use it to punish poorly performing residents, acknowledge and reward high achievers, and more importantly, to target residents at risk for failing the written board by providing them with additional resources.
A situation in which a resident ranks below the 30th percentile is concerning and predicts a high risk of board exam failure. First year resident scores are often correlated with a higher percentile than second year resident scores. This is a well known fact and stems from the difference in the composition of the two groups, with the first year group having a combination of preliminary residents from a wide range of backgrounds who tend to bring the average down and therefore boost up the percentiles of categorical residents.
This changes drastically in the second year of residency when categorical residents make up a majority of the group, and therefore a similar score would yield a drastically lower percentile.
For example, a first year resident who receives a 70% score may be in the 75th percentile first year, but then drop to the 50% percentile their second year.
The senior exams are a bit more difficult because it is a transition from basic science focused to clinically based, which is good for some, and not for others. This results in occasional disparaging scores between the junior and senior exams.
The new change in the ABSITE, with juniors and seniors taking the same exam, may alleviate some of these discrepancies.
Overall, a good, structured, persistent approach to studying for the ABSITE is key.
